Background
About 2/3 of the population in Bangladesh is made up of women
aged 15-64(29%) and children’s development, health and nutrition
have been neglected in the country. Maternal mortality rates
remain one of the highest in the world with 400 deaths per
100,000 live births. Infant mortality remains 20 fold higher
when compared to Japan, with 60 deaths per 1000 live births.
Forty-five percent of women suffer from malnutrition, while 51%
of children under 5 are underweight and malnourished. Morbidity
is unacceptably high in women and children, due to frequent
illnesses. Basic health and nutrition problems need to be given
more attention and development of potential human resources is
imperative. |

Concern
The above background information is a matter of concern. A group
of concerned individuals wish to establish a Centre for Woman
and Child Health (CWCH) to address the above health and
nutrition problems in partnership with all stakeholders. |

Concept
Centre for Woman and Child Health will also mean an Institute
for Woman and Child Health. This will be philanthropic and
non-profitable organization. Any income and donations will be
used of development of the centre. CWCH will work in
collaboration with the government and non-government health and
nutrition programmes.

Goal
The ultimate goal of the center is to promote the development of
women and children in Bangladesh. |

Mission
The mission of the centre is to support the overall development
of women and children, through improvement in health and
nutrition. |

Vision
Once established, the centre would visibly demonstrate its
efforts toward human development, particularly of women and
children. |

Proposed Functions
|
|
Conduct quality research programmes on woman health, child
health, nutrition and allied areas of medical sciences. |

Offer community and hospital-based training to health care
personnel on woman and child health, nutrition and allied
areas of medical sciences. |
|
|
Award degrees, diploma, certificates and other academic
distinction in woman and child health, nutrition and allied
areas of medical sciences. |
|
|
Organize and conduct courses, national and international
seminars, symposium, conferences and workshops on woman and
child health, nutrition and allied areas of medical
sciences. |
|
|
Provide health care, nutrition and allied services for
neonates, children adolescents, girls and women in the
inpatient, outpatient and community. |
|
|
Inpatient will have 300 bed facilities. |
|
|
Develop preventive and curative services in any other
specialty. |
|
|
Build awareness in the community on the preventive and
curative areas of woman and child health, nutrition and
allied subjects. |
|
|
Diagnostic facilities will include pathological
laboratories, diagnostic imaging and others. |
|
|
Establish and maintain libraries, reading facilities and IT
services in research, training and services. |
|
|
Publish reports on woman and child health, nutrition and
allied disciplines. |
|
|
Linkage with national and international institutes. |

Project Description
The centre for woman and child health will be established in an
area of 12 bighas of land at Yarpur, Baron on the
Tongi-Ashulia-EPZ Road, Savar, a peri-urban area, about 30
Kilometers from central Dhaka. The civil work will include
research, training, inpatient, outpatient, common service
facilities, external engineering and utility service. |

Current Activities
A project office is established to pursue the various activities
of the Centre. An architect and hospital planner has completed
the design of the outpatient department and the construction is
in progress. The outpatient services will begin from 1st June
2003. |
